For this project, we worked on the concept with a liturgically ordained Catholic designer. Risen Christ Catholic Church of Boise wanted to re-create the Biblical event of Christ arising from the tomb with this sculpture, while reflecting the church’s modern design theme. We carved a block of Vermont’s Danby marble to appear as if it were the fallen shrouds of Christ, with a basin for water submersion in the center for infant baptismal. Water was piped into a hidden recess in the folds of “drapery”, and cascades over the edge of the marble into the main pool in the center. We adjusted the flow of water (and the shape of the stream) to create a peaceful sound that can be heard subtly throughout the cathedral. We then created the large 10’ sandstone slab to represent the tomb door pulled aside.
